The brief

The challenge

Earlham Hall Stable Block is a charming and historic space located in the University of East Anglia campus in Norwich.

Set within the grounds of Earlham Hall, this Jacobean Manor House serves as a unique teaching facility for Law school students. A range of seminar rooms and an on-site law clinic offer legal consultations to the public, supporting increased student enrollment. This means that there are consistently people passing through the building.

The client wanted a seamlessly integrated design that used traditional materials in a contemporary way. The project needed to blend harmoniously with existing structures while subtly juxtaposing old and new elements—all achieved with minimal disruption to daily operations.

The primary challenges included:

Heritage constraints: Required sensitive design and materials to respect the 17th century Grade II listing while integrating modern functionality.

Our solution: Chain-Driven Platform Lift

We completed the installation of an APL Chain-Driven Platform Lift featuring a freestanding shaft, glazed panoramic doors, and an open-front configuration.

Amongst the surroundings of a 17th-century building, the lift blends seamlessly with the existing architecture while introducing a touch of modern elegance. It now provides accessible, inclusive travel to the seminar rooms for students all.

The project was completed on time and in accordance with all safety and regulatory standards.
