Cockfosters & Southgate Synagogue
The challenge
Cockfosters & Southgate Synagogue serves its community in North London, with activities spread across the ground and first floors of the building.
The synagogue wanted step-free access between the ground and first floors for members and visitors, using a lift that would suit the character of the building, with its stained glass and chandelier-lit hall.
The lift also had to be usable during Shabbat, when members do not operate electrical controls.
Our solution: Traction Platform Lift
We installed an APL Traction Platform Lift in a self-supporting glazed enclosure, serving two floors over 3,055mm of travel. It carries up to 500kg (six persons) on a 1,120 x 1,480mm platform and needed only a 60mm pit and 2,200mm headroom.
To meet the Shabbat requirement, we added a Shabbat function: once activated, the lift runs automatically between floors, so nobody needs to press a button. The function was approved by a notified body.
Automatic 900 x 2,000mm landing doors, a stainless steel handrail and a white RAL 9010 finish keep the lift simple to use and in keeping with the space.
